Górnik Zabrze faces a historic opportunity to win the Polish Cup, clashing with Raków Częstochowa in the final on May 2nd at the National Stadium. This marks the fourteenth time in history that the Tricolors have a chance to claim this valuable trophy, and it's also 70 years since the club's first final and a quarter-century since their last. Although Raków will be a tough opponent, Górnik defeated them twice in the Ekstraklasa this season.
Górnik Zabrze's early years in the Polish Cup were marked by bad luck. After being promoted to the top division in 1955, the club reached the final twice in a row, in 1956 and 1957. Unfortunately, both matches ended in defeats – first 0:3 against Legia Warsaw at the X-lecia Stadium, and a year later 1:2 against ŁKS Łódź. Another opportunity in 1962 also did not bring triumph, as Zagłębie Sosnowiec proved better, winning 2:1 at the Silesian Stadium.
The long-awaited triumph came in the 1964/65 season. After a difficult path, where Górnik Zabrze won two matches only after extra time, on June 2, 1965, at the stadium in Zielona Góra, captain Stanisław Oślizło was able to lift the Polish Cup. The team from Zabrze defeated Czarnych Żagań 4:0, making it a special year, as four weeks later the Tricolors celebrated their first historic double.
The following season, 1965/66, brought another championship title and a Polish Cup final, this time in Poznań against Legia Warsaw. The match, rated by the sports press as very average, ended in a 1:1 draw after 90 minutes. As players were preparing for penalty shootouts, Legia scored the winning goal in the 120th minute, a painful defeat for Górnik Zabrze.
The next five seasons saw Górnik Zabrze's true dominance in cup competitions, with five consecutive triumphs. In 1968, in the final held at the Silesian Stadium, Ruch Chorzów was defeated 3:0 thanks to goals from Włodzimierz Lubański. A year later, at the ŁKS stadium, the Zabrze team defeated Legia Warsaw 2:0, also with goals from Włodzimierz Lubański and Wilczek, which led them to the Cup Winners' Cup final.
In 1970, Górnik Zabrze once again faced Ruch Chorzów in the final at the Silesian Stadium. Although Ruch opened the scoring, goals from Włodzimierz Lubański, Zygfryd Banaś, and Jan Szaryński secured the victory. The next final, also played at Chorzów's stadium in 1971, was unfortunately spoiled by bad weather, but Górnik continued their winning streak, solidifying their position as cup monopolists.
